故事一篇:刀光裡的心影

聖誕期間,突然心血來潮想寫一篇寓言。本意是寫有寓意的故事,經兒子的提點下,才知寓言主角必定是動物,而內裡的道理多與道德相關。如此多規條,便棄寓言簡稱之為故事一篇好了。

寫故事一向不是我的興趣,尤記當年求學作文時,一定會選擇議論文。可能是嚮往哪種揮筆直走,在高速思路上奔馳的痛快感覺。寫故事對我來說有點像鑽進橫街窄巷,雖要左穿右插,還要強記街道門牌,否則寫到自己也迷失了方向。話雖如此,既然有霎時之衝動就不想窒礙思緒顛簸。就這樣寫了下列故事一篇,寫時沒有起名,現在就稱之為【刀光裡的心影】。

【刀光裡的心影】

胖子閒來走過市集,發現有一老頭子呆坐於其攤檔,檔上擺滿了鋒利的刀子,還有一塊陳舊的紙牌,上面寫著:「世上最鋒利的刀,每把二十塊錢。」

胖子拿起其中一把刀子端視了一會,心裡想著:「最鋒利的刀哪會這麼便宜!這個騙人的老頭子真可恥,看你會對我說甚麼花言巧語。」誰知老頭子動也不動,眼尾也沒有瞄胖子一眼。胖子放下刀子,沒趣地離開了攤檔。

隔了數天,胖子經過市集有見到老頭子的攤檔。一如已往,老頭子、刀子、跟牌子紋風不動。胖子心裡想著:「這個老頭子真有點可憐。」於是走上前說:「可以讓我試試刀子有多鋒利嗎?」老頭子指一指牌子說道:「你看不見這些都是最鋒利的刀,還要試甚麼?」胖子覺得老頭子不領情,那便只好二話不說,拂袖而去。

再過幾天,天氣劇變,變得寒風凜凜。胖子又看到老頭子瑟縮於風裡,攤檔依舊,刀子應該一把也沒有賣出。此情此景,胖子倒覺得這老頭子有點可敬,可說得上敬業樂業。胖子忍不住走了過去,跟老頭子買了一把刀子。雖然如此,胖子還是不信刀子有多鋒利,當作做了一件善事罷了。

回到家裡,胖子拿出刀子一試,果然真的是鋒利無比。胖子如獲至寶,心中大喜,不理天色已暗,快快跑回市集。見到老頭子仍在那裡,胖子的感覺完全不同了。他覺得老頭子誠實可信,急急從口袋裡掏出了一大堆鈔票,嚷著要跟老頭子買去攤檔上所有的刀子。老頭子輕輕地笑了一笑,然後說:「攤檔留給你好了。」他拿過了錢後,若有所悟似的從口袋中拿出紙和筆怱怱地寫了幾行字,放入信封還謹慎地封了口。然後煞有介事地向胖子說:「如果日後覺得刀子有問題,便打開看看。」說罷便輕輕地走離市集。胖子亦不經意地把這「保養証」塞進口袋,然後滿心歡喜地把那車「寶藏」推回家。

過了數天,天氣回暖。胖子造了個奪目的牌子,上面寫著:「世上最鋒利的刀,每把二百塊錢。」他在市集架起攤檔,拿著刀子切這割那,說得眉飛色舞,就是希望令途人信服。觀看的人雖不少,卻是沒有一個付錢買刀。

如是者過了一個星期,無論胖子叫得如何聲嘶力竭,示範得如何精彩絕倫,就是一把刀子都賣不出。:「難道刀子有問題?」胖子猛然想起那「保養証」,急忙打開一看。

「當你看這信的時候,我應該回到深山繼續造刀了。我的刀子絕對沒有問題,如果你現在還是努力地在市集中賣刀子的話,請聽聽我幾句說話。最初我賣的不只是鋒利的刀子,還有賣我的誠實。你買的也不單止是刀子,還有買你的善心。之後你買那一堆是你的貪婪,到了現在,想想你賣的是什麼呢?最後,多謝你的慷慨,你的銀兩已經足夠我這個深居簡出的老頭子一年多的生活費了。祝你身心健康!」

Just btw, would u suggest the fat guy works w/ the old man would be a better solution?

Thanks Francis. Be frank, I had nothing in mind when I started writing this story... just wrote something in my mind. However, you brought me a good question.

First of all, I do think they have already worked with each other, or kind of working with each other from a supply chain perspective. However, they have different (and very different) objective even though they are doing the same thing (selling knife in the market). From this angle, I think it is quite hard for them to work with each other, if you are talking about a true partnership. But if you further break down their roles as "producer" and "seller", then it would be making more sense. The fat guy couldn't sell the knife at $200 but it doesn't mean he couldn't sell it at $100, or at least some price level over $20.

It is interesting to think this in different view, business or philosophy... and that's why I keep the story without a real ending.
